The booking system will open at 6pm on Monday 30th October. The link to book can be found on our Facebook page or here, on our website.

Can I choose who I share a room with?

This is a simple, two stage process. After booking closes you’ll get the chance to register yourself to a friendship group with other people you want to be near on the trip. Every college has a designated group that you can join. If you’d rather in a separate group, then you can create a group with your friends. If a friendship group is made up from people of multiple colleges then we will try and put the group together but also put the whole group as close as we can to the college group where the most members of the group are in.

Then the room allocation process will start, and you’ll be able to assign yourself to a room with other people in the ‘friendship group/ college group’. All the other people in the group will be in other rooms on the same corridor! Room allocation doesn’t take place for four week after booking closes, so there’s plenty of time to meet all the people going on the trip.

Do I have to be a Durham student?

Students and alumni can bring non-Durham students as guests on the trip!

What if none of my friends want to go?

This is can be a worry for some people, especially freshers, so you’re not the only one! Firstly, you probably know lots of people coming on Palatinalps! The kind of people you chat to on the corridor, or play college sport with, but haven’t yet enquired about the holiday plans. Around 15% of the Durham student population go on Palatinalps, the chances of you not knowing anyone are slim.

Even if that’s the case, Palatinalps is the perfect place to meet people. Come along to our pre-trip socials, organised by the college reps, to find out which other people in your college are going on the trip. The coach journey down to Avoriaz is a certain ice-breaker, and then the Opening Night Party will seal a lifetime friendship.

I cant ski !!

Palatinalps is the trip for you. Every year over a third of students on Palatinalps are beginners!

Avoriaz is the perfect resort to ski for the first time, with beautiful tree lined runs for you to practice on and amazing off piste areas to distract the experts, keeping the beginners’ slopes clear for you to hone your skills.

We’ve got a tailor-made beginners package for you to help make learning to ski as affordable as possible. For £119 (£129 for snowboarders) you’ll get the skis, boots and poles for the week as well as 3 days of 2 hour lessons. All the lessons are with the excellent Evo 2 Ski so you’ll quickly pick up the basics and have a chance to show off to your more experienced mates.

Isn’t skiing dangerous and scary?!

Speeding down the slopes attached to a couple of planks of wood isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time (crazy as it sounds, people have assured us that this is so…), but lucky for them the ‘speeding’ part is in fact optional. The first thing you will learn is how to snowplough, which enables you to regulate your speed very easily and you will know how to stop before you’ve even picked up enough speed to make it worthwhile. Snow is soft, pistes can be very shallow and there’s always a bar at the bottom…

Should I wear a helmet?

Yes. Palatinalps highly, highly recommends that everyone wears a helmet whilst skiing (optional during après). These are only £19 to rent for the week if you dont have your own.

Is there anything for advanced Skiers ?

Yes. Avoriaz is part of the Port du Soleil which has a huge range of runs perfect for all ability. We also offer lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced Skiers and Snowboarders . We also offer off piste and freestyle workshops.

There are Palatinalps ran competitions. More information can be found about then here. There are lots of great prizes to be won.

Where can I get dropped off on the way back?

All coaches have pick up and drop off points in Durham, Grantham, London and Dover. You can swap and change your choices so that, for example, you’re picked up in London but dropped off in Durham after the trip.

How much luggage can I bring?

If travelling by coach, you can bring a large soft shell and a small carry on to take inside the coach. If you want to bring your own skis or snowboard then they can be brought in an extra bag, free of charge. If you’re flying then you’ll have to abide by airline baggage regulations, ensuring your luggage ways no more than 20kg, and you’ll have to pay an additional cost to bring your own skis.

Do I get a discount if I take my own transport?

Yes – there is a £40 reduction on the base price if you make your own way there and back. There’s no one-way reduction. We also offer excellent value transfers from Geneva to Avoriaz priced at £39 one way and £69 return.
